Thom Yorke for Saving Energy

When I read about things like this it makes me love my childhood favourite band even more. This is taken from ateaseweb.com, the unnoficial radiohead fan site. Yes, Thom Yorke is one of my role models.

Thom Yorke has threatened to quit touring unless measures are introduced to halt the “ridiculous consumption of energy” involved.

Speaking to The Guardian yesterday, Thom vented his fury at the current state of modern-day touring whilst promoting a Friends of The Earth climate change campaign.

“I would consider refusing to tour on environmental grounds, if nothing started happening to change the way the touring operates,” Yorke revealed.

“Some of our best ever shows have been in the US, but there’s 80,000 people there and they’ve all been sitting in traffic jams for five or six hours with their engines running to get there, which is bollocks.”

As for his own method of transport for reaching distant concert venues, Yorke said: “Long haul flights just feel wrong. I’m trying to figure out a way of getting to Japan by train. I quite fancy that Trans-Siberian whatsitsname but apparently it’s a bit scary.”

Thom Yorke will call on the government to make UK companies more accountable for their impacts on poor people and the global environment today, in an open letter to MPs in Tuesday’s Guardian. The letter urges MPs to back amendments to the Companies Bill which would make companies accountable for their social and environmental impacts. The Bill is due to receive its third reading in the House of Commons this week.

The letter references cases concerning Tesco’s workers rights records on fruit farms in South Africa, as well as a recent ActionAid report which detailed alleged environmental and human rights abuses by a subsidiary of UK mining giant Anglo-American at their operation in Ghana.

ROCKSTAR: SUPERNOVA

A second Canadian has won the ROCKSTAR competition. Lukas Rossi has been crowned the new lead singer of “Supernova” which also features former Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted and former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke.

Upon the announcement of the winner, the new band released their official first single ITS ALL LOVE. The track is quintessential hard rock mixed with mianstream melodies, some great guitar work by Gilby and poignant lyrics. Rossi’s vocals work very well here with him striking just the right balance between edgy and emotive. Its all love is sure to be a big hit and a perfect lead into the band’s album. However, this single lacks the addictive, explosive quality of J.D. Fortune’s unforgettable Pretty Vegas. Hmm I wonder why is this so?

I am not a big fan of Lukas and I believe Dilana deserved to get the title. Dilana not only had the voice deserving enough for the title but her personality was far more than that of a rock-star. She might have spoken a bit too much of her “truth” infront of the media, but hey she’s a novice and come on, even rockstars arent perfect!! With the rock-star looks, personality and, above all, voice i’m sure Dilana would have been a better choice. The opinion that girls cant rock the crowd is not so “wise.” Hasn’t Amy Lee done a great job? and Evanescence is surely one of the bands creating storms on the music charts. Dont you think so too?

Well we all had our favourites and we wanted them to win so lets just end with the usual sincere statement; “all happens for the good.”: Hoping to see Lukas’ album real soon!! And wishing Dilana all the luck for the future. Hope she rocks and kicks butt!!!

A Vicious Cycle-How Good Music gets Commercialized

Sometimes i wish i had a time-slot on one of the FM’s. Because there comes a time each day when you get sick of hearing about every other rapper’s cars, and women, and dough. And then there’s the hip hop artists and there asses and things. Also punk rockers and their angsty lyrics. It’s going to the dogs. But isn’t that why its successful?

Rap wasn’t like that before. Massive attack was called hip hop once, before it adopted the trip hop genre, or rather the trip hop genre adopted it. But why is this mass conformity so appealing to everyone? Why do so many amazing bands follow the peak-OC (Orange County-the show)-sell out cycle rather then continuing to come up with good music? Its not bad for people to enjoy music they like, that sounds good to them. Its when they argue that it gets to you. It’s when you get “what the hell do you listen to?” that you want to tell them just how much sweeter your music is, just because its original for starters, it’s also refreshing, maybe less easy to listen to but an acquired taste, but definitely music that’s top. Music doesn’t have to be slow to be relaxing, if the lyrics are light hearted, the song can still help you unwind even if its loud. Actually light hearted is narrowing it down, ambiguous rather, they should give you the freedom to think of them as two, three, four or even one hundred different things. Who can mess with “She don’t use jelly” or “Karma Police?” How good is it that Sigur Ros have a whole album in ‘hopelandic’ which is no language in particular. That way you don’t even bother about the lyrics and if you do you can make them mean what you want. And either way the music is still sublime. Whats bad is that the music industry spews out millions of half assed attempts at copying this legend and that, you see them around for a bit then they go. Then the next generation is on mtv regurgitating the same rubbish in a couple of years . AND IT SELLS. Again. and Again. And the bulk of the music industry at the moment is catering to the tastes of hundred of precocious pre-pubescent girls, and boys. Think maroon 5, think avril lavigne.

For me, one of the worst moments in television history was when i heard that ‘My Iron Lung’ had been performed on rockstar Supernova. I’ve grown up listening to radiohead, and they’ll remain my all time favorite band. To see their stuff on a crappy reality show was depressing. Because now when i go back to school, i get ” I LOVE RADIOHEAD” from all the people who made fun of me and my music. Because radiohead came on star world, and now all these new radiohead “lovers’s” new favourite radiohead song has made the not so subtle transition from Creep to My Iron Lung, commercial success swapped with commercial success two. Not that any of these people appreciated my iron lung before it came on rockstar or like radiohead besides creep and now my iron lung. Thom yorke might not mind i’m sure. It’ll get him money but still it makes me want to kick something and cringe.
